Do you ever have those moments in life when you see something or hear something and it hits you in the core of your being? I had one of those moments today. The good thing about these moments is they usually cause me to evaluate how I am living this life.
Now I need to explain a few things before we go any further. I am currently typing this on my computer with multiple tabs open on my internet browser, and my iPhone is sitting right beside me plugged in – just in case. My family thrives on technology as my two kids (6 & 4) have iPads and could probably teach most adults how to use them. I just completed a Doctor of Ministry degree in the area of Evangelism through digital and social media. Needless to say, I love the digital world and technology – there is something intriguing and fun about all that it encompasses.
However.
However, there are days I do wonder about the digital world. I wonder if my kids will one day inadvertently replace the joy of being outside having fun and playing in the dirt, for digging up the dirt in Minecraft, planting sunflowers in Plants vs. Zombies, and running through the jungle in Temple Run. Unlike myself, they have never ever known the world outside of the digital world – this is life to them.
Now don’t get me wrong – this is not a discussion encouraging the throwing out all things digital and technology based – that would just be crazy.
This is more of a reminder to pay attention and never forget the beauty that lies beyond on the screens we are so privileged to possess.
We only have one life, and we only have one world to experience that life in. May we not take either one of these for granted and live this life to the fullest in both the physical and yes, the digital world too.
I saw this commercial earlier today that caused me to stop and evaluate a few areas of life. This may be a granola bar commercial, but the message goes far beyond just a snack. Do something today that helps you see the beauty beyond the screens and encourage the children in your life to do the same – #RediscoverNature.
